The filter is doing more work here
A Las Vegas air handler runs a lot of hours. Cooling season is long, and for a good stretch of it the system is cycling most of the day — so the same filter sees far more air than it would in a milder climate. On top of that, the air it's pulling carries fine desert dust that gets into the house through every door opening, plus whatever the wind brings in during the spring.
A loaded filter doesn't fail dramatically. It just makes the blower work against more resistance, which costs you efficiency, pushes the system harder in July, and lets more of the fine stuff slip past into the coil. The coil is the expensive part. A dusty coil is a service call; a dirty filter is a five dollar part somebody forgot to change.
The reason people forget isn't laziness — it's that the filter is invisible until it isn't. There's no light and no alarm. And in plenty of valley homes the return is a ceiling grille in a hallway, which turns a two-minute job into a ladder job, which turns it into a next-weekend job.
What we actually do
- Pull the filter from every return in the house — not just the obvious one in the hallway. Two- and three-return homes are common here and the second one is routinely missed.
- Fit the correct size, from the list we recorded on your first visit. No approximations, no bending a 20x25 into a 20x24 frame.
- Install at the right MERV for your system. Higher isn't automatically better — an over-restrictive filter on a residential air handler starves it, and we would rather protect the equipment than sell you a rating.
- Confirm the airflow arrow points the right way. Backwards filters are more common than you'd think, including ones fitted by professionals.
- Date the new filter in marker, on the frame, so anyone who looks can see when it went in.
- Take the old ones away and log the change with a photo.
How often, and why quarterly works
Every visit — four times a year. That cadence is deliberate: it puts a fresh filter in ahead of the cooling season rather than halfway through it, and it means no filter in your house ever sits for eight months.
If your home has more dust load than most — construction nearby, a couple of shedding dogs, a return that sits right by a frequently-opened door — a quarterly change may not be quite enough. We'll see it in the filter's condition when we pull it and tell you, rather than swapping it silently and moving on.
